That glorious song of old...
The first time that glorious song was heard, it was performed by a huge angelic choir singing God's praises and announcing the good news of peace to all men and women. According to Luke, chapter 2, as the angel choir finished and returned backstage, excited sheepherders who witnessed the once-in-a-lifetime event talked things over among themselves. They wisely agreed to rush over to the tiny city of Bethlehem as fast as their sandals would allow and see for themselves what God had revealed. Too bad this isn't the response of every modern day man and woman who hears God's announcement today.
O hush the noise, ye men of strife...
As much as God desires for modern man to hear and respond like the sheepherders, things just don't seem to work out that way. The "noise" of the world gets in the way and the heavenly choir seems drowned out by our preoccupations with worldly concerns or our relentless pursuit of earthly idols.
O rest beside the weary road...
It doesn't have to be a long, weary road without an end in sight. The heaven-sent choir that pierced the midnight clear with the good news of Jesus Christ is singing again right now. Rest and you'll hear them. Rest and you'll be able to tell what direction to turn toward. Rest, then take your first step toward the singing. Rest, lay down your burdens and then pickup the child wrapped in swaddling clothes. See for yourself what God has revealed!
Merry Christmas and Happy 2010!
